German Shepherd Training Tips

The German shepherd is such a great dog German Pet Blog. We are attracted to the German shepherd by their beauty and strength. There is a since of protection and security that goes along with the thought of a German shepherd. When I think of a German shepherd I also think of loyalty.

Yes, loyal is definitely a good word to describe a German shepherd. My husband and I both share the same love of the German shepherd breed. We had made up our minds, when we moved to Germany, that we would buy this wonderful breed right from the place that they get their name. So, after just one month of living there we purchased a 4 month old German shepherd puppy.

We fell in love with her immediately, but I'm not going to lie to you, we found out soon enough, she was a handful. German shepherds are dogs that need lots of room to run and lots of attention. If you are considering the purchase or adoption of this wonderful breed please keep in mind the amount of time and training these dogs need.

We had a problem with her biting when we first brought her home. Play biting to be exact and with two little boys this was not good. We figured out that if we said ouch in a loud high pitched voice and ignored her until she settled down she would stop the biting. My two year old liked to tell her no and that worked too. Well, I must say it worked marvelously. We had no more problems with her biting after a very short time.

It did not take long for her to get very big. By the time she would reach one year of age she could drag me anywhere she wanted to go. I was a mere 115 pounds back then and she herself weighed 99 pounds. She dragged me on my knees one time right in front of some men that were working on a building close to where we lived. I was so embarrassed and very mad at my loyal friend.

It became clear that this wonderful dog was more than I could handle, but I have to be honest getting rid of her never crossed my mind. I did need to get some control though I knew she had to be trained Pets and Accessory Blog. Oh, she could sit and speak, but that was not enough.

I bought a book and I began to train my dog. I was at a huge disadvantage because I had waited until my dog was full grown to begin training. It is so important that you begin training your German shepherd or any large breed at the early age of six months. It will make training much easier for you.

Well, it took some time and patients, but I was able to train my German shepherd and what a great dog she turned out to be. I put a lot of work into her and it was all worth it. She could be with me everywhere. Even off leash she would obey my every command. Oh, and I was never embarrassed by being dragged again.
